Piano Aromatherapy Candles

For most piano players, there’s nothing more fulfilling than sitting on a bench, back erect, head held high, with fingers moving methodically across the keys, making the magical musical sounds that only a piano can produce.

For James, who fell in love with his mother’s grand piano as a young child, playing now as an adult both fulfilled him and relaxed his after a long day at his busy downtown law firm. This managing partner regularly sidestepped invitations for after-work drinks, preferring to unwind with his piano and the soothing aromatherapy candles his wife lovingly peppered his piano room with.

James and Delores were nearing their 40th wedding anniversary and tonight as she crossed between their home’s kitchen and dining room, James looked up from his piano as he played, and smiled to himself. Delores had been his best friend since his early college days and while they shared many common interests, including music, James was the only one who boasted piano-playing skills.

Delores, on the other hand, preferred to watch and listen intently as her husband played every evening. He knew she had carefully placed the various soy candles and the best scented jar candles throughout what the couple regularly called his “piano room” because she enjoyed the flickering flame and nice clear, soothing scent the candles produced, particularly as he played.

Just as he reached up to turn the sheet of music in front of him, he saw Delores entering the room with a book in hand. She was going to recline in the chaise lounge he bought her for Christmas. She was thrilled with the curvy piece of furniture and its thick pillow at her head. She had recently purchased a floor lamp to place beside it, but after lighting the scented candles on the end table beside her, she decided that the soft flames paired with the tall flames from the fireplace not only made the room cozy on this cold winter night, but provided her with more than enough light to read.

The smell from the candles was almost as mesmerizing as the lovely music James played, she thought, as she began to recline in her favorite chair. Drawing her long legs in, she thumbed the pages in her book until she got to the last one she “dog-eared” James often joked this was Delores’ worst habit, but as an avid book reader, Delores took very seriously how she marked her pages.

Meaning no disrespect to the written works, she turned the page corners down to also mark areas of the book she wanted to return to at a later date, perhaps as a reference or to once again take in a quote or passage that she had liked the first time she read it through. James knew that the book in Delores’ hands would be finished in no time and soon placed on a shelf in the library, which was also covered in fragrant candles, both soy candles and jar candles that Delores regularly purchased online. Visitors to the couple’s home – from friends and family to neighbors and colleagues at the law firm, often commentated on the homes inviting feel and how they felt the addition of so many candles, both in James’ piano room where people tended to gather, and throughout the home made the real difference.

While Delores appreciated every compliment, and always enjoyed opening her home up to others, she preferred quiet candle-lit nights with her husband and best friend and on the rare occasion James would play one just for her, he always did so with a special candle lit piano serenade, making her feel as special as James knew she was About the Author: Debbie Bello is a writer who enjoys home fragrances and decorating her home with candles.
