Selecting Piano Keyboard Easier Than a Teacher

If you think selecting a piano keyboard is difficult, wait till you try to select a good piano teacher, but in this case Scott Houston is a good bet. Anyone who’s ever listened to Scott Houston knows what a great piano teacher he is. If you don’t know who Scott Houston is then perhaps a hint would be in order. Scott is the creater and  host of the Emmy award-winning PBS show The Piano Guy.

Scott grew up in a family of musicians. His dad played the reeds including the baritone sax and bass clarinet and his mother was an operatic singer. So Scott was surrounded by music for most of his life at home.

While growing up at home Scott learned how to play a piano keyboard as most professionals do using lead sheets. A fellow by the name of John Radd taught him to use lead sheets. Interestingly Scott was a drummer at the time when he is learning to use lead sheets. Scott was so far ahead in his drumming classes they began to learn the piano while the drum class students were catching up to him. So it was at this time that Scott had a change of heart and continued with the piano.

Scott indicated that the thing that he enjoys most is just simply play the piano without any goal in mind. Not performing, and have no one to listen to me, just play for myself.

Scott offers some advice for those who wish to learn to play the piano. He suggests finding a style of music that you are interested in, find some songs within that style then you need to determine if you want to play in public or just play for your own pleasure. Once you discover all of that then you can put together an action plan that will help you realize your goal of playing the style of music that you like.
